THE DOG DAYS IN SPRING
Back during the early years of guiding the Suwannee River and Okefenokee Swamp I would stop in on the town of White Springs, Florida and do a small narrative history tour of the town. On one such trip I stopped at an old cracker style house behind Storemants Grocery. I stopped because it was a picture perfect scene. An old Florida Cracker house leaning a bit with an falling off wrap around porch, An extremely old couple sitting on a porch swing doing not much of anything, and a host of sorry looking dogs weighed down by a large volume of bloated ticks laying on the yard and under the porch.
One of these dogs, a blue tic hound, looked to be near its final hour. This peticular dog sported a long wirey erection that he licked with great intensity. One of my clients, a round middle aged man from Boston, jokingly told the owner of the dog "Boy I sure wish I could do that!"
The old man stopped from swinging, looked up at the round man, and said "Son, if you do that, that dog will bite you."
